The best lesson.

I was teaching the 6 and 7 year olds Sunday school last week and we were talking about New Years Resolutions.  They are so cute.  When I asked them what they wanted their 2016 to look like, not surprisingly, none of them mentioned health, career, habits or goals.  They all just wanted to play.  They are all dreamers and quickly think from their little hearts and happy minds.

I continued and of course, the lesson this first Sunday in the new year was about the BEST resolution we can make.  And that was to put God first!  We talked about how the kids could make God a priority in the New Year.  I had to stop and think about my own 2016 goals and plans.  That’s when I realized, this lesson was for me!  I told the kids, whoa, this lesson is speaking straight to my goal oriented heart!  I needed this lesson more than these adorable little kids did!  What’s the most important in my life? What is the number one thing?  What are you talents you can use to love others with your actions and time?

The verse read:  Matthew 6:33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.  So what did that mean for us all?  Seek God and his ways of living, and the rest of our life will unfold.  Yep.  It’s that simple.  Make God a priority, amazing restful quiet time with Him everyday to have the greatest life!  That sunk in for me, and hopefully for the kids too.  We all shared ways we could focus on God this year.  Praying before eating to thank God for our food.  Sharing, caring, being kind, loving, cleaning up, being patient, not fighting, being honest.  All of these way to love were perfect examples of putting God first.

So here is our simple prayer that we all shared:

Dear God,

Show us how to focus on you and spend time with you.  May we learn to seek your face and put you first.

In Jesus’ Name,

Amen

Sheila and the yellow zone kids.
